7 August 1821 born in Keispelt Martinus son of Petrus Wagener and Catharina Caudy.
Joseph and Lucille Sauber went to visit Uncle John Wagner in Cascade before his death. During his visit Uncle John related things about his father, Martin Wagner. John took Joseph and Lucille out to the farm that Martin Wagner had owned. There were little shelter buildings every so often on the land. John explained that they were where Martin used to go and stand and check on his workers to see if they were working. Martin owned a lot of property and according to John, his father would give his workers land and a house if they were batchelors. If they were married he only gave them land.
Martin Wagner is buried at St. Mary's Cemetery in Cascade, Iowa next to his wife Johanna. There is one stone for both of them. It is a square obelisk with their names on either side. Martin's is on the south surface and Johanna'a is on the north side to indicate where their graves are. The inscriptions read:

On this date an indenture made 19 December 1881 between John Sauber and Elizabeth his wife of Eureka, Dakota County, Minnesota and Catherine Sauber of Lakeville, Dakota County, Minnesota. For four hundred dollars John and Elizabeth Sauber sold Catherine Sauber "lot number six (6) in block number six (6) in the village of now Lakeville heretofor Fairfield.
Following is a letter from Florence Freemouw Maas describing Nicholas and Catherine's home in Lakeville. Florence lived next door when she was young before World War 1:
I was thinking about Lakeville the other day and what I remember. I was very young then. You went upstairs on a closed stairway. I slept up there. As I remember there were 2 rooms and the beds had feather mattresses. There was a big room downstairs with a big dining table and chairs. There was a chimney stove and I think a rocker. At one side under the upstairs stairway there was an old china cupboard. There was a door there that led to a never used sitting room with a love seat, carved table, and a round painted beautiful lamp. Then a bedroom with a poster bed and big high bureau. I used to peek in from an outside frosted glass door with a deer on it. I used to be awed by it all. I guess Grandma sold all this stuff when she moved with Lorrie to Minneapolis. The kitchen was tiny with a trap door and a big wood range. The sink had a pump and shelving and was at the end. I can still see Grandma with her corset getting ready for church. You had to pull the strings so tight for her. I don't see how she breathed. There was a little shed near the house and long plank boards going to the barn. The toilet was to the right from there equipped with the latest Sears Catalogue for wiping. There was a drugstore in back which had some rickidy stairs which we used to play on. Sometimes at the drugstore we got a root beer float which cost 5 cents. World War I was on then and I used to go to the store with Grandma and she bought maryane cookies. There was a creek and a bridge on our way to church. Those were the "good?" old days. So much for memory. Must close now. Keep well!!

All Saints Parish in Lakeville was formed in 1876 and this is where all of the baptisms for Catherine's children, except for Mary Ann, were recorded. The first church was built in 1877. For many years Catherine prepared the Holy Communion for the church. She also had the job of cleaning the church. Joseph Sauber was an alter boy in this church until he was 18. Jospeh also had the job of keeping the fires going. Helen Perry can remember Catherine scrubbing the boardwalk to the early church on her hands and knees.
Catherine had John E WAGNER.

DROPPED DEAD IN WAGON
J.E. Wagner, of Butterfield, Found Dead on Load of Wood
Last Saturday about noon, J.E. Wagner, was found dead on his wagon in the yard near his home in Richland Township. That morning he had his breakfast between 6 and 7 o'clock, with two companions, Felix Felton and Nick Seil, wood choppers, who boarded with him, and appeared to be in good health. After breakfast he hitched up a team and went to work hauling wood from the timber nearby. Felton and Seil did not see him after he left the premises after breakfast for they themselves went to work, but as late as 11 o'clock, they thought they heard him in the woods. When found Wagner's body had collapsed on top of the load of wood after he had thrown a few sticks from the wagon. He had fallen forward on his face. Dr. May testified that death was due to acute failure of the heart, and death took place before the body fell, as the tongue was cut but did not bleed. The coroner of Jones County was informed of his death, and deputized Justice Geo. D. Sailor, who summoned the following jury: T.W. Sheridan, T.W. Heaney and William Martin, and examined a number of witnesses, eliciting the facts as generalized in the foregoing. The verdict was as follows:
State of Iowa, Jones County}ss
