In the matter of the estate of Mathias Sauber deceased. To N. Meyer, probate judge of Scott County. The petition of John Sauber of Dakota County respectfully represents that he is a son to Mathias Sauber, deceased: That said deceased departed this life at New Market about the 3rd day of November A.D. 1879, without leaving a will and testament, to the knowledge, information or belief of your petitioner; that the said deceased died possessed of certain personal property in said county, the value whereof doed not exceed the sum of five hundred dollars, as your petitioner has been informed and believes; and also left debts due unpaid to the amount of no dollars; that the said deceased has left him surviving John Sauber, William Sauber, Nicolas Sauber, Katherine Sauber, Mary Ann, wife of Peter Birk, children, and John, Caecilia, Mary, Katharina, Margaretha, Mathias and Magdalena Jung, minor children of Mary Sauber, daughter to Mathias Sauber and Maria Katharina Sauber daughter of the deceased; that said deceased was at the time of his death, an inhabitant of the county of Scott and state of Minnesota. Your petioner therefore asks that letters of administration of the estate of the said intestate be granted unto John Mahowald of Scott Co. Dated the 15th day of March A.D. 1880

Know all men by these presents: That we, John Mahowald of the town of New Market, Scott County, Minnesota as principal, and John Sauber of Eureka, Dakota County, Minnesota as surities, are held and firmly bound unto N. Meyer Judge of the Probate of the County of Scott, Minnesota, in the sum of five hundred dollars, lawful money of the United States, to be paid to the said Judge of Probate or his successors in office: for which payment well and truly to be made, we bind ourselves, our and each of our heirs, executors and administrators, jointly and severally, firmly by these presents. Signed with our hands, and sealed with our seals, this 10th day of April A.D. 1880. The condition of this obligation is such, that if the above bounden John Mahowald, letters of administration upon the estate of Mathias Sauber, late of Scott County, Minnesota deceased, being to him garnted, shall and will well and faithfully execute the trust reposed in him, as administrator of all and singular the goods, chattels, credits, and estates of said deceased; and shall make and return into the Probate Court of the County of Scott and State of Minnesota, within three months, a true and perfect inventory of all the goods, chattels, rights, credits, and estate of said deceased, which shall come to his possession or knowledge, or to the possession of any other person for him; and shall administer according to law, all the goods, chattles, rights, credits, and estate of said deceased, which shall at any time come to his possession, or to the possession of any other person for him, and out of the same shall pay and discharge all debts and charges chargeable on the same, or such dividends thereon as shall be ordered and decreed by said court; and shall render a true and just account of his administration to said court within one year, and at any other time when required by said court; and shall perform all orders and decrees of said court, by him to be performed in the premises, then this obligation shall be void, otherwise it shall be and remain in full force and virtue.

Pursuant to an order made in the above entitled matter, on the 15th day of March 1880, the petition of John Sauber that letters of Administration upon said estate be granted unto John Mahowald was this day brought on to be heard and comsidered, and the affidavit of C.A. Stevens, printer, having been filed herein, showing that the notice required to be given and published by said order, has been given and published as ordered. And it appearing to the satisfaction of this court, by competent proof, that the said Mathias Sauber died on the 5th day of November 1880 at the town of New Market intestate, and that he was a resident of Scott County at the time of his death, and that the said intestate left estate within this said county to be administered upon, the probable value of which does not exceed the sum of five hundred dollars. And that said petitioner is a son of said deceased, and that said John Mahowald is a suitable and competant person to administer upon said estate, pursuant to said petition, said petitioner appearing, and no one appearing to oppose; it is ordered, that said John Mahowald, before entering upon his duties as such administrator, and before letters of administration be to him issued, give bond to the judge of this court in the sum of five hundred dollars, with sufficient sureties, to be approved by said judge, conditioned according to law.

John Sauber appeared on the muster rolls of the 4th regiment, Minnesota Infantry at Ft Snelling, Minnesota on July 8, 1864. He was 25 years old with farmer listed as an occupation. He had been mustered in at Rochester, Minnesota June 6, 1864 for a period of three years. He had black eyes, black hair, dark complexion, height 5 foot 5 1/2 inches. His enlistment was credited to the New Market District.
He was promoted to corporal January 15, 1865 and mustered out at Louisville, Kentucky on July 19, 1865. He originally filed for an invalid pension on July 3, 1890 based on being unable to work due to tumors and rheumatism. While in the service at Alatoona, Georgia John came down with chronic diarhea. During the march to the sea in November 1864 he again came down with and attack of diarhea and became so ill for an extended time period that they released him from the service. John also suffered from much rheumatism while on the march with Sherman through Georgia and the Carolinas. After the death of John, his widow recieved a pension based on his service until the time of her death.

History of Lakeville: 1878-1978
Nick Sauber was hired by the village in 1882 to ring the fire bell, light the street lamps and be constable for a yearly salary of $12.50. We know he continued to do these jobs for the village until 1898 when his name drops out of the village minute books. His pay improved over the years and in 1887 he was earning $85.00 a year. Each evening he would make the rounds of kerosene lamps on Main Street with a step ladder and light the lamps. Later in the evening he would make the rounds again and extinguish the lamps. The village minutes record a motion made in 1887 that the street lights were to be extinguished at ten at night.
Nicholas Sauber's shoe repair shop was in block ten of the village of Lakeville. In the same block was the Methodist Church, La Duc General Store and the JW Wheeler Harness Shop.
Ham Clay Sr was the editor of the Dakota County Tribune. According to helen Perry, Susan Rosa Sauber and Anna Theresa worked for Ham Clay Sr when he had the printing press in Lakeville. Susan Rosa Sauber also worked for him when he moved the presses to Farmington. Ham thought Sue and Anna were the prettiest girls he had ever seen.
Nicolas married Maryana SHULTS on 15 April 1870 in Scott County, Minnesota. Maryana was born in May 1851 in France and died on 20 October 1874 in Lakeville, Dakota County, Minnesota at age 23. They had three children: Elizabeth, Caroline, and John.

On this date an indenture made 19 December 1881 between John Sauber and Elizabeth his wife of Eureka, Dakota County, Minnesota and Catherine Sauber of Lakeville, Dakota County, Minnesota. For four hundred dollars John and Elizabeth Sauber sold Catherine Sauber "lot number six (6) in block number six (6) in the village of now Lakeville heretofor Fairfield.
Following is a letter from Florence Freemouw Maas describing Nicholas and Catherine's home in Lakeville. Florence lived next door when she was young before World War 1:
I was thinking about Lakeville the other day and what I remember. I was very young then. You went upstairs on a closed stairway. I slept up there. As I remember there were 2 rooms and the beds had feather mattresses. There was a big room downstairs with a big dining table and chairs. There was a chimney stove and I think a rocker. At one side under the upstairs stairway there was an old china cupboard. There was a door there that led to a never used sitting room with a love seat, carved table, and a round painted beautiful lamp. Then a bedroom with a poster bed and big high bureau. I used to peek in from an outside frosted glass door with a deer on it. I used to be awed by it all. I guess Grandma sold all this stuff when she moved with Lorrie to Minneapolis. The kitchen was tiny with a trap door and a big wood range. The sink had a pump and shelving and was at the end. I can still see Grandma with her corset getting ready for church. You had to pull the strings so tight for her. I don't see how she breathed. There was a little shed near the house and long plank boards going to the barn. The toilet was to the right from there equipped with the latest Sears Catalogue for wiping. There was a drugstore in back which had some rickidy stairs which we used to play on. Sometimes at the drugstore we got a root beer float which cost 5 cents. World War I was on then and I used to go to the store with Grandma and she bought maryane cookies. There was a creek and a bridge on our way to church. Those were the "good?" old days. So much for memory. Must close now. Keep well!!

All Saints Parish in Lakeville was formed in 1876 and this is where all of the baptisms for Catherine's children, except for Mary Ann, were recorded. The first church was built in 1877. For many years Catherine prepared the Holy Communion for the church. She also had the job of cleaning the church. Joseph Sauber was an alter boy in this church until he was 18. Jospeh also had the job of keeping the fires going. Helen Perry can remember Catherine scrubbing the boardwalk to the early church on her hands and knees.

Walter F Maas died February 19, 1991 at the Kanabec County Hospital in Mora. He was 89 years old.
He was born to Peter and Emily Maas on November 16, 1901, in St. Michaels, MN. His family lived on a farm there. Upon leaving school in the eighth grade, he worked as a mechanic fixing trucks and returning them to their owners. After a few years the family farm was sold and they moved to Minneapolis where he took a job working in the Flour Mill. At the age of 17, he and his brother Clarence went into the grocery store business. In the 1940's the two brothers each owned their own grocery store. In 1952 while recuperating from a blood clot he tried to retire - selling the store. Back to work found him at Siwok Lumber Co. where he was a salesman. Retiring again he worked on the resort he owned in Walker, MN. The next retirement found him raising fruit trees in Medford. This is when he finally began to take life more easy.
Hunting, fishing, and gardening were all very important to him. Gardening was a favorite pastime.
He married Frances in 1920 and they raised a large family in their 61 years of marriage.
In November 1990, Walter moved into the Villa Health Care Center in Mora, where he resided until his death.
He is survived by his wife, Frances; three sons, Frank of Minneapolis, George of Fridley, Walter of Anoka; five daughters, Mrs. James (Jean) Ward of Brook Park, Irene Williams of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Mrs. George (Alice) Langer of White Bear Lake, MN, Mrs. David (Maria) Odell of Belle Fourche, SD, Gloria Maas of Grand Rapids, MN; 17 grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, February 23, 1991 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mora. Father Eugene Belair officiated.
Pallbearers were Tom Maas, Andrew Maas, Richard Maas, Michael Maas, Stephen Maas, and David Maas.
Interment was at St. Mary's Cemetery in Minneapolis, MN.
Arrangements were by Dresser-Methven Funeral Services of Mora, MN.

From St. Jospeh, Stearns Co., Minn. We have recieved the news that among the sisters of Holy Benedict in Minnesota not less than 9 Luxembourgers serve. One of them is serving among the indians. Just recently, two sisters were blessed by Bishop Seidenbusch; Sister Aemiliana born as Steil of Osweiler and Sister Agatha born as Catherine Sauber of Alzingen.
Catherine is buried at St. Joseph, Stearns County, Minnesota with the other sisters of her order. At the time of her death she was known as Sister Wunibalda. She is listed on Mathias Sauber's will as Sister Agatha.

Dear Sister Leonissa;
Poor old Miss Wunibald is passed away for good. It is like as though she was suddenly spirited away by some magic power, it all came so suddenly. She was at holy Mass in the morning and went to holy Communion as usual. At about 11:00 o'clock in the forenoon of April 26th she was saying the stations in the chapel when one of the sisters noticed that she was acting rather peculiarly and approached her to see what was wrong. She said she was sick and Sister helped her up to her room and put her to bed. She was in bed but a short time when she again wanted to get up, but the nurse, who was summoned
in the meantime induced her to remain in bed. She took a little soup for dinner but almost immediately after taking it she noticed a change come on her. The next thing the nurse noticed that she was in a dying condition. A priest was summoned and he came in time to administer Extreme Unction and say all the dying prayers, but by that time she was in an unconscious condition.
It was Miss Wunibald custom to ask for the return of the habit to her several times a year, at times she would be quite insistent about it and then again she would be satisfied with the mere asking
even if she got no satisfaction. In view of her apparent desire to have the holy habit of St. Benedict we put the scapular on her when dying and also placed the habit over her. She was vested in the full
religious garb when placed into the casket and now lies buried in it on our cemetery. She will be henceforth be known to us as Sister Wunibald and her grave also is marked in the same manner as the rest of the Sister's. The doctor pronounced the cause of death to have been a cerebral hemorrhage.
We will send you some of her little belongings in the near future. Her needs in life were very few and the greater part of her time was spent in prayer. As far back as I remember she never missed an exercise in the chapel whether it was held day or night, and besides that it was her custom for years to go over to church for holy mass besides having attended the one in the chapel. There are good reasons to think that she was very dear to God and that there never was a sin on her soul.
